Two hardscape jobs can look identical the week they finish and be completely different two years later. The difference is almost never the material on top. It is these four things, and they are what we would want you asking any contractor about.

Where Jobs Fail

The Base

Pavers laid on a shortcut base heave and crack inside two years, and on Houston clay that is not a maybe. Compacted base material is most of the labour on a patio and none of what you look at. It is also the single reason a job is still level in year five.

Not Optional

The Edging

Gravel without a proper edge does not stay gravel. It migrates into the lawn, into the beds, and eventually into the mower. Bender board is a small line on a quote and it is the difference between a path that holds its shape and one you are topping up every spring.

Order Matters

Water Before Surface

If a corner of the yard holds water, that gets solved before anything is built over it. Otherwise you have paid for a nice surface sitting on the same problem, and in a few years you will pay again to take it up. Boring first, pretty second.

Ask Before You Buy

Drivable Or Not

A path built to walk on will not take a vehicle, and finding that out with a truck on it is an expensive way to learn. Every quote we write states which it is. If somebody else is quoting you and it does not say, ask them.
A bad install on good materials is worse than a good install on cheaper ones. Most low-priced hardscape is full-priced work done badly, and the saving disappears the first time something has to be redone. That is the whole reason we talk about base material more than we talk about colours.

Usually the base and the edging, because those are the parts nobody sees. Two patios can use the same pavers and cost very different amounts depending on how much compacted material went underneath. Ask any quote you are comparing what the base build-up is and whether edging is included. If it does not say, that is your answer.

A small gravel and step stone path is one day. A larger one runs 2 to 4 days. Paver walkways take 1 to 2 days and paver patios 1 to 3. The longer jobs are usually combined builds where drainage goes in with the hardscape. Most customers get installed within 1 to 4 weeks of approving the quote.

Under $5,000 it is 50% to schedule and 50% on completion after the final walkthrough. Over $5,000 it is 50% to schedule, 30% at the halfway mark, and 20% on completion. Same structure for every customer. The deposit reserves the crew, the date, and the materials.
