Houston Gravel &
Step Stone Walkways.
Three Ways to Build a Path.
Step Stones in Gravel
Interlocking Pavers
Concrete Paths
The Gravel Isn't the Problem. What's Under It Is.
Most gravel paths that look bad after a year had nothing wrong with the gravel. They were missing one of four things underneath it.
No weed barrier, so grass and weeds push up through the stones by the second summer. No edging, so the gravel walks into the lawn and the house. Bad grade, so water pools in the low spots and the path develops dips. No compacted base, so the step stones sit uneven, rock underfoot, and crack.
Those four things are the job. Commercial-grade landscape fabric down, an edging border on both sides, grade sloped so water leaves, base compacted flat before a single stone goes in. None of it shows up in the finished photo. All of it shows up a year later.
If you’re getting quotes and nobody has mentioned the base or the barrier, ask.

A Path Drains Itself. Not the Yard.
A gravel path drains itself. It doesn’t drain the yard. If water is coming off the roof or over from the neighbor’s lot, the path will handle its own strip and the rest will keep pooling.
When we walk the side yard, we look at the downspouts first. Sometimes the right answer is a French drain under the path, and we’ll quote both so you can see the difference. On a sloped side yard, the path sometimes needs a small retaining wall to hold the grade. We’ll say so on the first visit.
Step stones in gravel aren’t drivable. If you need to get a mower, a trailer, or a truck across it, that’s a different build and we’ll say so.

A Side Yard
That Stops
Turning to Mud.
Most of the walkways we build go on the side of the house, where the grass never grew and the water never left. The build is simple. An edging border, base material, concrete step stones spaced about 3½ inches apart, with black star gravel between them. Water drains through it. Feet don’t sink in it. Gravel stays where we put it.
Most gravel and step-stone walkways run $2,500-$3,000, about $2,600 for a 50 ft by 5 ft walkway, with a minimum job size of 100 sq. ft. Price moves with the walkway’s length and width (a longer or wider path takes more gravel and step stones), whether both sides of the house get gravel and step stones or just one side does, with gravel alone on the other, which costs much less, and your choice of gravel (black star is the premium option) and edging (a Holland paver border costs more than the standard pressure-treated wood).
The five items on the right are the whole job. No mystery.
