Patio Types

Four Ways to Build a Patio.

Option 01

Gravel & Stepstones

The least expensive patio option and the usual choice for a patio extension. A gravel and stepstone extension usually runs $2,300 to $3,000, with a 10x10 extension, the smallest job we take, at about $2,300. It is the simplest way to add outdoor living space without the cost of a full paver or concrete surface.
Option 02

Interlocking Pavers

A solid paver surface built to last. We dig down about 6 to 7 inches and install 4 to 7 inches of compacted base, then run concrete along the outside edge to keep the edge pavers from spreading, and sweep polymeric sand into the joints. It costs more than gravel and stepstones, especially on bigger areas. See the steps below for how we build it.
Option 03

Stepstones with Holland Paver Infill

Stepstones with Holland pavers filling the space between them, for a more premium look than gravel and stepstones alone. It costs more than our gravel and stepstone option. The stepstones give the layout definition while the Holland pavers fill in a clean, finished surface between them.
Option 04

Concrete

A poured slab, about 4 inches thick, using 3,500 PSI concrete. We give it a broom finish for traction when wet and slope it so water runs away from the house. A solid, low maintenance surface when a continuous poured patio is what you want.
Why Patios Fail

Pavers Don't Sink. The Base Under Them Does.

When a paver patio dips, heaves, or spreads at the edges, the pavers almost never caused it. The base under them did.

Houston clay swells when it’s wet and shrinks when it’s dry. A patio set on a couple of inches of sand over that clay moves with it. The low corner holds water, the edge pavers walk outward, and the joints open up.

So the job is the part you never see. Dig down 6 to 7 inches. Compact 4 to 7 inches of base. Grade it so water runs away from the house. Lock the outside edge in concrete so nothing spreads. Then set the pavers.

If you’re getting quotes and nobody has told you how deep they dig, ask.

How We Build It

A Patio That Looks Finished, Not Thrown Down.

Most backyard patios that fail do so because of what’s under them, not what’s on top. Bigger areas cost more, and removing an old slab runs $2 per square foot. We excavate and compact the base so it holds up through Houston summers and heavy rain. Here’s how we build an interlocking paver patio, step by step.

Site Prep & Base Work

We dig down about 6-7 inches and install 4-7 inches of compacted base, Stabilizer Base or decomposed granite, graded so water runs away from the house.

Paver Layout & Pattern

Pavers laid in your chosen pattern, with clean cuts around the house and structures and 45-degree corners where the design allows.

Edge Restraints

Concrete installed along the outside edge as hidden support, so the edge pavers don't spread or shift over time.

Joint Sand & Compaction

After the pavers are set, we compact the surface to seat them evenly into the sand underneath, then sweep polymeric sand into the joints to lock them together and cut down on weeds and erosion.

Final Grade & Cleanup

Every patio is graded so water moves away from the house. Dirt and construction debris are hauled away, and you review the finished work with us at a final walkthrough.
