Houston Retaining
Walls.

A sloped yard loses a little soil every time it rains. You usually notice when the mulch ends up on the sidewalk. We build raised beds, tree rings, flower bed borders and small terraced walls that stop it, handle the drainage behind them, and tie back into the yard. Most installs take 1 to 3 days.

Wall Types

Three Things a Wall Can Do.

Type 01

Retaining walls

Hold back a slope, stop soil washing out, and turn a hillside into something you can actually plant or walk on. Most residential walls we build run under 4 feet.
Type 02

Seat Walls

A low wall around a patio that doubles as seating. Same build, capped flat. Works well when a patio needs an edge and you don't want more furniture out there year-round.
Type 03

Terraced Beds

Two or three shorter walls stepped up a slope instead of one tall one. Costs less than a single high wall, drains better, and gives you planting space on each level.
Why Retaining Walls Fail

Walls Don't Fail at the Face. They Fail Behind It.

When a retaining wall leans, bulges, or drops a course, the blocks almost never caused it. Water built up behind the wall with nowhere to go and pushed. That’s it.

So the parts of the job you can’t see are the parts that matter. Compacted base under the first course. Gravel backfill behind the full height. Drainage provisions so water leaves instead of collecting. A wall built on good block with none of that will move within two years. A wall built properly on ordinary block will still be straight in twenty.

If a wall is already leaning or failing, we don’t patch it. We take it out and rebuild it with new materials on a proper base.

If you’re getting quotes and nobody has mentioned what goes behind the wall, ask.

How We Build It

Hold The Grade.
Stop The Erosion.

A sloped yard that loses soil every time it rains isn’t a landscaping problem. It’s a grade problem. We build small retaining walls that hold the ground in place, create flat usable space where there wasn’t any, and finish clean against the surrounding yard.

No engineering required on the jobs we take. If a project needs a structural engineer, we’ll tell you before we quote it, not after.

Site Assessment & Layout

We walk the slope, check the soil, and mark the wall line before any digging starts. The layout determines drainage, footing depth, and how the wall ties into the existing grade.

Footing & Base Course

Houston's clay is why the base matters: we never set blocks on clay or bare dirt. We compact 2 to 3 inches of decomposed granite, a fine crushed stone that packs tight, under the wall and set the first course level, with extra prep if the soil is unstable or water collects there. We don't skip it.

Wall Build

Blocks set course by course, back-filled and compacted as we go. Proper batter on the face so the wall leans into the load, not away from it.

Drainage Behind the Wall

Gravel backfill and drainage provisions behind the wall so water pressure doesn't build up and push it out over time.

Final Grade & Cleanup

Top of wall tied into the surrounding grade, site cleaned up, and walked with you before we collect final payment.
