Houston Gravel &
Step Stone Walkways.

There's a path along the side of your house that turns to mud every time it rains. We replace it with concrete step stones set in black star gravel, edged so nothing migrates into the lawn. Most installs take 1 to 3 days.

Path Types

Three Ways to Build a Path.

Option 01

Step Stones in Gravel

The one you've probably seen in the videos. Concrete step stones spaced for a normal stride, gravel locked in around them. You can pick the gravel. Most customers go with black star, and it's what we recommend. It's angular, so it locks together instead of rolling, and it doesn't fade or track into the house. This is what we build most.
Option 02

Interlocking Pavers

A solid surface instead of stone and gravel. Takes 1 to 2 days and makes a side yard look like it belongs to a more expensive house. Worth it when you want the path to feel finished, not just functional. Same pavers we use on our patios.
Option 03

Concrete Paths

A poured slab instead of stones and gravel. Solid, low maintenance, and the right call when you need a continuous surface. We build them when they fit the yard. We don't lead with them.
Why Gravel Paths Fail

The Gravel Isn't the Problem. What's Under It Is.

Most gravel paths that look bad after a year had nothing wrong with the gravel. They were missing one of four things underneath it.

No weed barrier, so grass and weeds push up through the stones by the second summer. No edging, so the gravel walks into the lawn and the house. Bad grade, so water pools in the low spots and the path develops dips. No compacted base, so the step stones sit uneven, rock underfoot, and crack.

Those four things are the job. Commercial-grade landscape fabric down, an edging border on both sides, grade sloped so water leaves, base compacted flat before a single stone goes in. None of it shows up in the finished photo. All of it shows up a year later.

If you’re getting quotes and nobody has mentioned the base or the barrier, ask.

What a Path Won't Fix

A Path Drains Itself. Not the Yard.

A gravel path drains itself. It doesn’t drain the yard. If water is coming off the roof or over from the neighbor’s lot, the path will handle its own strip and the rest will keep pooling.

When we walk the side yard, we look at the downspouts first. Sometimes the right answer is a French drain under the path, and we’ll quote both so you can see the difference. On a sloped side yard, the path sometimes needs a small retaining wall to hold the grade. We’ll say so on the first visit.

Step stones in gravel aren’t drivable. If you need to get a mower, a trailer, or a truck across it, that’s a different build and we’ll say so.

Paths We've Built.

These are finished step stone and gravel walkways: a front entry, side yards, backyards, a curved garden path and an elevated patio walkway, each laid out differently. The stone layout follows your pick, whether that's a straight line, a diagonal pattern, or natural stone, or if you're not sure, we center the stones about 3½ inches apart for an even look. You can pick the gravel, too.
How We Build It

A Side Yard
That Stops
Turning to Mud.

Most of the walkways we build go on the side of the house, where the grass never grew and the water never left. The build is simple. An edging border, base material, concrete step stones spaced about 3½ inches apart, with black star gravel between them. Water drains through it. Feet don’t sink in it. Gravel stays where we put it.

Most gravel and step-stone walkways run $2,500-$3,000, about $2,600 for a 50 ft by 5 ft walkway, with a minimum job size of 100 sq. ft. Price moves with the walkway’s length and width (a longer or wider path takes more gravel and step stones), whether both sides of the house get gravel and step stones or just one side does, with gravel alone on the other, which costs much less, and your choice of gravel (black star is the premium option) and edging (a Holland paver border costs more than the standard pressure-treated wood).

The five items on the right are the whole job. No mystery.

Site Prep & Base Work

We dig the path about 3 to 4 inches deep. Commercial-grade landscape fabric goes down between soil and gravel, letting water through while keeping soil out of the gravel and cutting weeds from below. About 2 inches of granite gravel base goes on top of that, compacted tight with a hand tamper on small paths or a plate compactor on larger ones, and sloped so water moves away from the house. The finished system is about 4 inches thick.

Step Stone Layout

Concrete step stones set level and spaced for a natural walking stride. We follow your layout if you have one; otherwise stones are centered about 3½ inches apart, measured rather than placed by eye.

Black Star Gravel Install

Black star gravel fills between and around each stone. It won't fade, roll underfoot, or end up on your lawn.

Edging Border

A border keeps gravel out of the grass and beds, using pressure-treated wood, Bendaboard (flexible, good on curves), metal edging, or pavers. When pavers are the border, the outside is secured with concrete so they don't spread.

Final Grade & Cleanup

We slope the finished path away from the house or toward a drain, haul away and dispose of the dirt and debris from the job, and walk it with you before we leave. Anything you point out on that walk-through is documented and addressed or scheduled. If our workmanship doesn't match the scope you approved, we document it and coordinate the correction.
